Sometimes you just need to go Old School. Don’t get me wrong: I’ll experiment with any new whiskey that shows up on the shelf, but there’s something to be said for a classic Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. With a history going back nearly 200 years and a mashbill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley, you can give your hip, new-fangled distilled spirits a break. Coming in at 94 proof (47%) this whiskey is exactly what the doctor ordered: plenty of oak and spice on the nose, with a powerful dose of spice on the palate. And it makes a killer bourbon Manhattan, making it an essential to your liquor cabinet. Take two ounces of Elijah Craig, half an ounce of your best sweet vermouth, two dashes of bitters, throw in a cherry, and call me in the morning.
