Seth’s Pick: Clendenen Family Vineyards ‘The Pip’ Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley 2016

Body: medium
Fruit: dried cherries, blackberries
Food Pairings: duck, salmon, grilled meats or vegetables
Organic: yes

Jim Clendenen is most famous for his Au Bon Climat label, but decided to create an avenue to play and explore different styles of wine in his Family label. Growing his own organic fruit, the CFV label started small but has grown to include Nebbiolo and Tocai Fruliano and more.

The Pip, named after his vineyard mascot Border Collie, is a lush, but restrained style of California Pinot Noir. Rich in the mouth but with fresh young lively fruit it creates harmony and balance in the glass. This is a wonderful middle ground to enjoy with food or on its own.
