Joe’s Pick: Lapalu Brouilly La Croix des Rameaux 2014

Jean-Claude Lapalu is a second generation grower turned winemaker who’s mostly self-taught. He farms 30 acres of Gamay organically, partially biodynamically. His Brouilly La Croix des Rameaux comes from a one hectare parcel which is hand harvested, is mostly destemmed and undergoes partial carbonic maceration before being aged in neutral barriques for 10 months.

On the leaner side with a textured mid-palate of bright cranberry notes and electric acidity that lingers. It’s drinking wonderfully now (though is age-worthy), particularly with simple food like grilled meat, pesto pasta, and turkey. It’s an experience to drink such a distinctive wine that isn’t obtrusive, that simply and perfectly accompanies a meal or occasion. It doesn’t get more non interventionist.
