While I hate to play favorites, particularly in wine, Syrah may be my favorite red grape varietal of the new year. Nebbiolo still has its place in my heart, but it may have been momentarily dethroned, at least until this weather clears. Dark black fruit, earthy tannins and notes of peppercorn dominate the palate and finish on this wine! It’s exactly what I’m looking for when it comes to Syrah and this highly-praised winery refuses to source its grapes from anywhere but its own vineyards, even for their entry level offering. There are only three producers from California I look to for Syrah if I venture outside of the Rhone Valley and Tensley continues to deliver. You don’t have to believe me though, just ask Robert Parker!
