Caitlyn’s Pick: Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

This is a wine I’ve been longing to highlight as much as I’ve been longing to return to the beautifulwinery and generous hospitality of the Pepe family. If you think you’ve tasted all that Montepulciano d’Abruzzo has to offer, think again. Emidio Pepe produces incredibly long-lived, read 40+ years, wines from the local varietals Montepulciano, Trebbiano, and Pecorino. Their farm is biodynamic and everything is done with the utmost care including pressing the grapes by hand and foot, no heavy machinery here! The result is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted. This vintage is drinking well, the tannins have become more velvety and the nose is full of autumn leaves and mushrooms. If you’re celebrating something special, consider stepping outside of the Barolo-Brunello box and taking a detour to Italy’s eastern coast.
