While Gruner Veltliner is best known in the regions of Austria, Czech Republic, and Slovakia, it has found its American home in the relatively cool region of Oregon. This wine is named for their location on a ridge in the Chehalem Mountains AVA and is a haven for native raptors. Fermented in stainless steel, it retains its signature acidity and peppery finish while displaying unique tropical notes of melon. It has grip and pithiness that suggests brief skin contact with the juice, and it lingers heavy on the mid-palette. I didn’t think that I would enjoy a new world gruner as much as I enjoy this gem. When you find yourself in the mood for a unique white, give Raptor Ridge a go.
