Amanda’s Pick: G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo 2016

Body: Medium
Fruit: Ripe red berries with a perfumed nose of violets and roses
Food Pairings: Slow braised beef, hearty stews, tomato-based dishes
Organic: no

G.D. Vajra was founded in 1972 by husband and wife Aldo and Milena Vaira. Aldo broke from family tradition when he inherited almost 100 acres of vineyards in Vergne – the highest village in the Commune of Barolo – and began producing wines under his own label. Vajra is a Sanskrit word meaning both thunderbolt and diamond, which seems appropriate for the family who claim to make wine using both traditional and non-traditional methods.
Nebbiolo is the Guns & Roses of grapes, best known for its role in producing powerful Barolos and Barbarescos.  For it’s power and grace, this 2016 Vajra Nebbiolo is affectionately nicknamed “Baby Barolo” by wine critics.
